Interview Question: Tell me about yourself.
Whenever I conduct any job interviews, I always ask – “Tell me about yourself”. It’s good practice because that’s often the very first thing an interviewer will ask you to do—whether you’re having a preliminary phone screen, speaking to your prospective boss, or sitting down with the CEO during a final round.
It’s one of the most frequently asked interview question: “Tell me about yourself.” Your response will set the tone for the rest of the interview—no pressure!

This is one of the important job interview questions to making candidates blurt out their life stories. But that isn’t what potential employers want to hear.
Here’s a little secret: When an interviewer says, “Tell me about yourself,” he or she wants to know how your experience is pertinent to the job you’re interviewing for.
There are plenty of times when you’ll hear these exact wordings:
“Tell me about yourself.” But interviewers might have their versions of the prompt that are asking pretty much the same thing, including:
- I have your resume in front of me but tell me more about yourself.
- Walk me through your experiences.
- I’d love to hear more about your journey.
- Tell me a little bit more about your background.

The formula for answering: Tell me about yourself.
Present: Talk a little bit about what your current role is, the scope of it, and perhaps a big recent accomplishment.
Past: Tell the interviewer how you got there and/or mention the previous experience that’s relevant to the job and company you’re applying for.
Future: Segue into what you’re looking to do next and why you’re interested in this gig (and a great fit for it, too).
